Comic-Con but not really

Image
Comic-Con, but not really. Nerdy Canadian Heaven November 29th 2018 For those who do not know of Fanexpo, the best way to explain it is the Canadian version of comic-con. A nerdy heaven for people that love pop-culture, video games and more. To quote the Fanexpo Canada official page it’s “the largest Comics, Sci-Fi, Horror, Anime, and Gaming event in Canada and the 3rd largest Pop Culture event in North America.” ( https://www.fanexpocanada.com/en/home.html ). Fanexpo has something for everyone, it is a place where you can wait in line for a hot minute and meet someone new who loves the same things as you and can debate about it, you can support your local artist in the artist alley, you can go to “how to” events on how to photograph your favourite cosplayer or how to draw comics or even how to LARP. I have been attending for the last 4 years and some highlights of my trips would be, watching Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill sing Bohemian Rhapsody, attending the Back to the Fu...

How Lil Wayne Made a Timeless Album

Lil Wayne is a very smart individual who knows how to work everything into his advantage. His album is more thought out then most people would notice.  Wayne was signed onto Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label at the age of nine and went on to be the flagship artist for the record label. This is where Wayne met his long time mentor Birdman who was the co-founder and public face of Cash Money Records, they even released an album together called “Like Father Like Son”. That’s why it was unexpected when Birdman wouldn't allow the release of Tha Carter V and Lil Wayne announced a $51 million lawsuit to get out of his contract, three years later the album was finally released.  Even though his album was postponed many times, he worked that into his marketing and this album was hands down his most anticipated album to be released, also being the first non-Cash Money release ever.  The album opens with an emotional introduction spoken by Lil Wayne’...

travel never looked so good

How Travel defined me  I have spent most of my life travelling, having lived in 4 countries and traveled to over 13. I see it as expanding your mind, opening it up to all the different possibilities life has to offer. I was once told this quote by an old French man I found on the streets of downtown Toronto, he said,” imagine the world is one giant house, and you are born into one room. Now imagine never leaving that room, that is why we must travel”. I like to believe that I have lived my life according to that quote. When I tell people about thus quote a lot respond with what if the room your born in to is amazing and has everything you may every want in life. Well if you don’t see how bad some rooms have it, however will you learn to apricate what you have. The happiest people I have ever met where those who had absolutely nothing. Who were living every day as if it would be their last. Those with absolutely nothing appreciates everything, and those with everything rarely ap...

Are we millennials too busy for democracy?

Image
I absolutely despise the “blaming the millennials for everything” rhetoric (like this video that went viral last year does) . We are not notably worse than any other generation, maybe worse off, if anything. The fact is we face unique challenges, living in a fast-paced world that we don’t fully understand while being represented by an older generation that grew up in a completely different reality and are dangerously out of touch with the challenges faced by those of us who are just starting out. This talk by Adam Conover talks a lot about the concept of generations and has a lot to do with this.  .  That being said, we really screw up on this one: This video is on point. Even though it is about the American midterm elections,  It is a slap on the face of a good half of the Canadian Millennials that complain about the current state of things, but don’t cast a ballot. To be fair, the 18-24-year-old vote increased 18.3 points last federal election, but ...

Coffee Shops and Productivity

Image
Are you really more productive when doing your work in a coffee shop?   Image source:  https://masterofyourusb.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/15897164697_2bd5860679_o.jpg?w=1200 The rich, warm aroma of coffee beans that filter through the air. Muffled chattering of conversations you’re trying not to get caught eavesdropping on. The gentle sway of music quietly humming away around you. It's the perfect environment to get your life back on track by getting some much needed work done. Isn’t it? Recent research out of Belgium seems to suggest it may be. Psychology professors suggest that simply being in the presence of others who are working hard increase our own drive to work hard; essentially implying that mental effort is contagious. But is there more to it than that? Is it the scent of coffee that gives us a well-deserved kick in the rear to get our heads in the game? Perhaps it's the ambient collection that mega-corporation- I mean, popular co...

Why Leaving Social Media Might Make You a Better Person

Image
Social media has led to a lot of great things - from sharing cute dog videos to the reunion of twins separated at birth . But have you ever thought about what your life would be like without social media? I’m willing to bet that you have, and for a number of different reasons. Maybe you want more free time to learn the tuba or volunteer. And while that sounds fine and dandy - in fact, it probably sounds like a better life than you have with social media - the idea of being disconnected from the world scares you. But what if I told you that quitting social media would make you a better person? Empathy vs. Social Media A study done by the sociology department at the University of Michigan found that “college kids today are about 40 percent lower in empathy than their counterparts of 20 or 30 years ago, as measured by standard tests of this personality trait.” What does that mean? Well, it means that people between the ages of 18-24 aren’t as concerned about seeing things from...
